The March Mosaic
by Angela Harkless

Now here’s a gala fundraiser for a children’s charity that did not forget the children! The March Mosaic Gala allowed some 700 gala supporters to see up-close the good work that Chicago Youth

Centers (CYC) does for the 11,000 inner-city children it serves.
On March 8, 2003, CYC held its annual black-tie spring gala at The Chicago Hilton & Towers. The gala was a wonderful blend of adult sophistication and the charm and exuberance of youth. The evening included a cocktail reception, dinner, silent and live auction, raffle and dancing to The Stu Hirsch Orchestra.
Children were very much part of the evening’s festivities. CYC children and teens served as hosts and hostesses, their artwork was on display during the silent auction, and they performed song and dance numbers for dinner entertainment.
Debra & John Gray peruse the silent auction.
A momentous feature of the gala was the auctioning of a one-of-a-kind sculpture designed by local artist, Carolyn Elaine. Elaine created a life-size, plaster molding sculpture of three CYC children.

The sculpture represents the mosaic created by friendships that reach across cultures and backgrounds.
CYC presented its “Spirit of Youth” Award to the Wm Wrigley Jr. Company and The Wrigley Company Foundation in recognition of their strong commitment to youth issues and learning activities.
“The funds raised by the March Mosaic will help CYC raise 40 percent of unrestricted funds for our programs. We’ll be able to
provide expanded programs for our children,” said Miller Anderson, President and CEO of Chicago Youth Centers. The March Mosaic is a partnership between Chicago Youth Centers, WGN-TV Children’s Charities and Chicago Tribune Charities and funds of the McCormick Tribune Foundation.
CYC participants Mary Meaders, Rick Meaders and Hector Santiaguillo stand in front of the life sized sculpture they modeled for titled “Capture the Moment.”
